Phoenix

Incy Wincy spider climbing up the spout
Down came the rain and washed the spider out
Out came the sun and dried up all the rain
Now Incy Wincy spider went up the spout again!

Like many of you I’m sure, I heard this many times as a child and sang it to me kids too. But it wasn’t until yesterday that I realised what it meant! Which is, picking yourself up and starting over when life hits you down. In the past, life hit me down quite a few times, and luckily my Chinese name means Phoenix, so I always managed to arise from the ashes, with help from my family and friends.. and never ending optimism!

These days, the only problems I have (touch wood) are my cards going rogue at the end! So this post will be about what I did with them.

moon in sky

I knew I wanted to make a blue card to play along with Cards in Envy for their Deep Blue theme, but I didn’t know it was going to be this blue until I had to cover up mistakes I made in the next card! I used Stampin Up’s Pacific Point to create the shades of blue then I went over it with my metal effect paint to create the star like sky. I added some white ink from Color box to create the aura like effect you sometimes see around the moon. I stamped and heat embossed the sentiment from Technique Junkies and sponged in some light blue ink from SU. I really love how the sky turned out, I only wish I could paint like that with a paint brush!

I also played along at Addicted to CAS  Midnight with this card.

So as I mentioned, the previous card was made that way because of mistakes I made with this card.

geek bday card

I was using Artplorations stencil to try and create wifi signals for this geeky birthday card for a boy who loves coding, and in the beginning I thought I could do it without masking too much. But I got blue ink in areas of the card I didn’t want (hence the card above) so I had to mask everything around except the area I wanted to colour! The sentiment and computer cables are from Technique Junkies and I scribbled in Happy Birthday in Computer Craft code around the circle and in binary on the black label!

I entered this card in:

Little Tangles – Anything Goes challenge

CASology’s Stencil challenge casology

Aude Sentiment – Anything Goes + a sentiment

CAS-ual Fridays – Birthday Boys  CASual fridays

Sweet Stampin’ Challenge – Terrible Teens as I don’t know many teen who are not constantly connected nowadays! I will probably make another card for this challenge as I have 2 teenagers at home so there is no lack of inspiration!

The next card emanated another “Oh No” from me at the end of another long selective stencilling process!

father's day thank you

I used The Crafter’s Workshop Mini Art Is stencil and just coloured in those three words.

word stenciling

I had masked the centre part of the card with painter’s masking tape and when I took them off, they took off the paper too! So I had to cut a panel of white card stock, tinted the sides with the same shades I used on the sentiments and adhered it on the card. I wanted to make this card for my nieces to give to my brother on Father’s Day so I chose the sentiment from Artplorations.

I followed the sketch from

Freshly Made Sketches freshly made sketch

and the colours from

Just Add Ink just add ink.jpg

and I made it CAS to play along at

CASology’s Stencil challenge

The next post will also be about using mistakes I made but I want to eat breakfast first! Its already 10h30 here in Germany!

Have a great weekend!

  5. I’m quite often having ‘Oh No’ moments when I’m card making, actually I probably use more descriptive words than ‘Oh No’……..Its frustrating but oh so good when you can fix it up with a cut or a sequin here and there. You did a fantastic job using the challenge colours with your stenciling and love the CAS design of your card. Its perfect for the Just Add Ink challenge and I’m so glad you joined us. Also wanted to say that the blue of your moon card is absolutely gorgeous!!!!

These are all gorgeous cards Gwendolyn! it can be so disappointing when after so much effort we find something has gone wrong – and you have done such a lovely job of going forward and all three are more special for it.
