Hi all! Happy New Year to all my Asian readers who celebrate Chinese New Year! We have a new challenge over at the Addicted to Stamps and More challenge blog and I made a Chinese New Year for our “Holiday” theme, but you can join in with other holiday card or cards depicting the holidays you’ve been on.
The first day of the Chinese New Year started on the 5th of February this year, to coincide with the full moon, and in China, it is celebrated for 15 days, at least. In Singapore, where I grew up, we celebrated it for 3 days, starting with the New Year’s Eve Reunion dinner on the night before the New Year. Much like Thanksgiving in the States, people travel back to their families for this dinner and this causes the largest human migration in the world!
On the first day of the New Year, we visit the eldest family members first and as my dad was the eldest in his family, all his relatives came to visit us to pay their respects to my dad. On the 2nd day, we visited other relatives and on the third day, our non-Chinese friends were allowed to visit us. There was alot of eating going on during these visits and I loved visiting my father’s sisters as they were very good cooks!
There is also the tradition of exchanging red packets “ang pows” filled with cash which was given to all unmarried people, but that tradition changed to just children as more adults married later and later in life, or never got married. To be honest, very often, I dragged my feet and visited my relatives in my uncomfortable new clothes only to get those red packets of cash!
Well, I hope you’ll join us in our new challenge and I look forward to seeing your cards in the link up here. Thanks for stopping by!
Hugs,
